About Laura

Laura K. Smith (b. 1989) is a Canadian-born landscape painter based near Antwerp, Belgium. Deeply inspired by the natural world, Laura creates vibrant, expressive works that reflect her personal experience of joy in nature. Her paintings are often described as peaceful, joyful, strong, colourful, dream-like, and haunting.

Laura’s artistic journey began in childhood, drawing and painting alongside her grandfather (“Opa”). Early influences from the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements continue to shape her style today. She studied Studio Fine Arts, Art History, and Art Theory across Canada, the UK, France, and Belgium, and earned a Ph.D. in Literature in 2018.

Before dedicating herself fully to painting, Laura worked in academia and held roles as an art consultant, gallery assistant, and researcher at prestigious institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum and Colnaghi, the world’s oldest commercial art gallery.

Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Laura paints colourful landscapes of her native Canada and her adopted home of Belgium. More recently, she has begun exploring watercolour as a complementary medium. Through her art, Laura seeks to share the sense of wonder and joy she finds in both nature and the creative process.
