Garden Series
Dahlias, magnolias, tulips: the focus of this series is the delicacy of colour and form found in our natural surroundings. First inspired by a visit to the Jardin des Plantes in Coutances, France, this series explores the colour and form of flowers, buds, and leaves in the parks and gardens that I visit. These paintings zoom-in on small sections of garden-beds and tree branches to highlight organic shapes.
This spring I visited Arboretum Wespelaar in Haacht, Belgium. The Arboretum is well known for its collection of magnolias, which bloom brilliantly for a short window of time each spring. In all directions trees were in full bloom: butter yellow, bright fuchsia, soft white flowers. One tree took my breath away. The multiple tree branches, heavy with fuchsia blossoms, hung down to the ground like a weeping willow. This created a magical magnolia hideaway; a feeling of being inside a magnificent tree house.
